Spring is well under way and you know what that means… hayfever season is here! So May has become the National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month.
When you think about it, it really is the perfect time to spread the awareness because of all the traditional wet days we get in April. Of course April showers help give us the flowers that bloom in May, but they also spread the spores through the air and effect everyone who suffers with allergies.
The National Asthma and Allergy Awareness program was first established back in 1984 and usually, as part of this program, in some area people can receive free screenings for asthma and allergies.
Part of the program explains asthma to younger children helping them to understand its seriousness. They also learn how famous people coped and dealt with their own childhood asthma.
Fortunately most children grow out of asthma as they get older and it has been found that perusing an active lifestyle helps to overcome the disease. This is one of the main reasons that lots of schools stage a walk-a-thon during May – further highlighting the fact that this month is the National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month.
